Sex and the City - NYLON

The ever fashionable London experience: Now I know it's hardly news that women around the globe are queuing up to go and see Sarah Jessica Parker and her friends in a movie that celebrates female friendship. I mean that’s hardly going to stop the press but for me it made my day when a friend in New York told me she was going to watch it with a mutual friend of our's almost at the same time as my trip with two other mutual friends. Infact I think I squealed! The thought of our group, once café-visiting, cocktail-drinking, dinner-party-throwing female friends à la Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte....in what seems like a lifetime ago....connecting through a story that was significant for us both then and now... was definitely something to shout about.
It was everything I expected and then some. We laughed, sighed, and commented as we watched this much anticipated cinema adaptation. We found the characters both endearing and flawed, ofcourse recognising a bit of us in all of them. I thought the supporting role of Jennifer Hudson a little rehearsed in the sense that the bond between her and Carried Bradshaw seemed to happen overnight and was not very convincing in my opinion. Nonetheless she too with her passion for fashion made the film all the more enjoyable.
Essentially the recurring theme was Love - which was nice, and this was the corny, down on one knee to propose type which Carries seemed to shun throughout the series. Branding traditional expressions of love as nothing but clichés. The Russian lover's poetry was far too much.... yet in SATC the movie, we get a fair dose of poetry in all its archaic forms from Voltaire to Beethoven. The cinema was unsurprisingly packed with women, excited women and a few brave, self assured men. An audience full of fans who were so giddy with happiness and anticipation that they clapped when the film started and when it ended. I don’t think I've ever experienced that in London.
As for the fashion, some outfits and accessories admittedly were questionable including the LV (that’s Louis Vuitton to those in the know) bag which made the personal assistant Louise (Jennifer Hudson) so happy. Admittedly it was perhaps all too high fashion for us high street gals who still can't afford Manolos. But there were others like the maxis they wore on holiday which were breathtakingly beautiful and undeniably feminine. As for the great love story between Carrie and Big, we had our doubts about it and agreed that the others had much stronger relationships including that of the 'closet nymphomaniac' that Samantha had become and her famous amazingly good looking beau, Smith.
All in all the evening was just perfect, a funny, emotionally charged at times but always stylish feel good film about the special bond of friendship that women share and how that friendship informs and supports other aspects of their lives. Back to my friends, the ones in London that is..., we shared popcorn, nachos and laughter and promised to spend more time together. And to find out from our transatlantic friends how good SATC was for them.
